Organisational Context

Article 54 of the Rome Statute mandates the Office of the Prosecutor (‘the Office’) to give particular consideration to sexual violence, gender violence and violence against children in its investigations and prosecutions. These crimes are thus a strategic priority for the Office. To fulfil this mandate, the Office has issued a Policy on Gender-based Crimes (GBC), which focuses on acts of sexual violence, reproductive violence and other forms of gender-based violence that constitute crimes under the Rome Statute.
